PSA- Final Update

Ta-da! The end!

PSA- Day 5

The purpose of these photos was to address food and recyclable waste, and how you can fix the problem through action. I fervently wanted to let people know how muff perfectly good stuff got wasted, and what they could do about it.

The photos were not hard to shoot. I just had to get close-ups of people holding things, and that was that. Penning and photoshoping out the backgrounds that were distracting was annoying, but not impossible. To create the boxes, i decreased opacity and put a singular image in the background. I think that it all worked out for the best.

When people see these images, i hope that they feel something that they need to do or at least think about. I made these to raise environmental awareness, and only you can see that the idea happens.

PSA -day 3

Today was okay. I managed to create the bases for the PSAs, but now i think i need to fine tune the word structure and organization. Hopefully i’ll do that next class.

PSA Project- Day 1

These are my photos from the first day of PSA project work. Using Barry’s camera, i was able to take them quickly. I felt that they were well taken for quick shots, and could work when photo shopped into a single piece. Next time, i hope to bring in more recyclable items and food scraps myself, so the variety of items will range in diversity.

PSA Project Research/Proposal

The PSA project is something i look forward to doing, and so i got three off the internet for some experimentation.

The first PSA I found is of a woman eating a burger filled with cigarettes. I can’t figure out what company made the ad, but the point is to not inhale smoke from other’s cigarettes. It’s stupid and wrong. The PSA utilizes shock treatment to showcase who simplistically serious the idea is, and symbolism by sticking smokes in a burger. It seems effective since it shows the visual threat of smokes getting into your daily routine. And for me, I definitely believe its message.

The second PSA is of a Muslim woman with google world’s blocking her mouth, saying things that are men’s sexist and misogynistic opinions on them. Sponsored by UnWomen.org, the main message appears to be that women should not need to be under men’s biast opinions if they are to be equals. The image utilizes text and a close-up of the face for the realistic importance there is inside it.

The third PSA i picked up shows the earth, specifically its trees, and is sponsored by the WWF. The main message (communicated through personification, symbolism, and shock value) is the Earth is dying, and unless we fight our cancerous actions upon its body, there won’t be much environmental diversity out there. For someone like me, who respects the environment and hates how much humans hurt it, i personally agree with this message.

My proposal is to focus squarely on the environment with my two ads. They address how much people waste every day. The first one centers on material items that can be donated or given away instead of being chucked into the garbage. The second one shows food scraps, including a pizza, a cracked egg shell, and a banana peel falling down into a garbage can; the point being that these items can be composted or returned to the environment instead of wasting them. The two images would have text on the top left, middle right, and middle bottom of it all saying that recycle is the best option.. The photos would be shot from ant’s eye view, so the hand is at the top and has the items falling down with foreshortening effects added in. The target audience would be Americans who constantly waste without thought, and should change their methods. By using foreshortening, ant’s eye view, and imagery, i hope it all works out for the best.

Photo Mimicry Project- Final Post

I was inspired to choose Winogrand as my photographer because of the simplicity of the black and white, and the fact that he shot pictures of people and urban life- which i prefer to do myself. The theme of the photos is sort of close-ups and random shots from different angles, all geared towards showing different p.o.v’s of normal life or people in motion. My photos, compared to Winogrand’s photos, have people, in-motion shots, and various people symbolizing normal life. During the project, i faced challenges such as getting people in the right position, taking pictures that made sense, capturing what he did in his own style, and adding the right photographic touch to it all. I managed to work through these challenges by being more confident in my abilities, as well as having people pose and grabbing shots before they could disappear at a moment’s notice. When people look at my photos, i hope that they feel well-taken shots, a homage to Winogrand’s black-and-white work, and something unique itself.
